| United
qualified for Europe as Cup Finalists in 2005, as Cup
winners Celtic had also qualified for the Champions League.
The Cup Winners Cup tournament had been abandoned in 1998
and national Cup places now entering the UEFA Cup.
In
the second qualifying round, United paid their first
ever visit to Finland, and played out an uninspiring
0-0 draw in the pouring rain with Myllykosken Pallo
47 in the town of Anjalankoski. However, there was nothing
to suggest United were in any danger of missing out
on going through to the next round.
Missing
out on the 1st leg through injury, captain Paul Ritchie
returned for the home leg at Tannadice, where MyPa were
close to taking an early lead through Adriano. United
then went all out for a goal, and after a few good chances
Mark Kerr buried a shot into the far corner of the net
and Collin Samuel put United 2 up with a good finish.
United were now in total control and had chances to
finish the match, but two goals weren't enough as sloppy
defending in the last quarter of the game made it 2-2
and United embarrassingly went out on the away goals
rule.
