2005 - United suffered their heaviest defeat in years when they faced Rangers in the League Cup semi-final at Hampden. 2-0 down at half-time, Jason Scotland came on as a substitute and pulled one back, then Jim McIntyre hit a fantastic effort off the woodwork as United pushed for an equaliser. But the game then changed as Rangers went on to humiliate United 7-1, the clubs worst defeat in over 40 years.
1968 - Finn Seemann and Ian Mitchell scored as United lost 3-2 to Aberdeen at Tannadice.
1956 - United faced Dundee for the first time in 5 years as they met in the 5th round of the Scottish Cup at Tannadice. Maurice Milne scored twice, his second in the dying minutes to earn United a replay as they held the Division One club to a 2-2 draw.
1961 - A remarkable game at Broomfield saw United equalise three times with goals from Dennis Gillespie, Gibby Ormond and Walter Carlyle. But it took a Johnstone own goal with two minutes to go to give United a share of the points in an amazing 4-4 draw with Airdrieonians.
1978 - A George Fleming goal just after half-time was enough for a 1-0 win over Ayr United at Somerset Park.
1985 - Just days after beating Hibs 2-0 at Tannadice, the clubs met again in the 3rd Round of the Scottish Cup, where goals from Paul Sturrock, Eamonn Bannon and Billy Kirkwood gave United a 3-0 win at Tannadice to go through to the next round.
1995 - United gained a valuable point at Ibrox as Jerren Nixon scored in a 1-1 draw with Rangers.
1975 - Andy Gray scored twice in two days, as United took on Berwick Rangers in the 3rd Round of the Scottish Cup. After scoring in the 1-1 draw at Tannadice just day before, he then scored the winner in a 1-0 win at Shielfield Park.
1983 - Charlie Nicholas gave Celtic an early lead at Tannadice, but Davie Dodds grabbed the equaliser for United just before half time. Eamonn Bannon had the chance to give United the points from the penalty spot, but Bonner saved his kick.
1999 - Ex-United man David Hannah returned to the club after a spell at Celtic, when Manager Paul Sturrock signed the midfielder for £300,000.
2005 - With manager Ian McCall's side under pressure after their humiliating 7-1 defeat at the hands of Rangers in the League Cup, United travelled to Dumfries to face Queen of the South in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup. Goals from Jim McIntyre, Stuart Duff and Mark Wilson gave United a well deserved victory in a difficult week and a place in the quarter finals.
2008 - United faced Abereen at Tynecastle in the semi final of the League Cup, where Aberdeen took the lead after 18 minutes before Darren Dods headered in the equaliser 4 minutes later. A 10 minute spell in the second half put United in total control, as Christian Kalvanes, in his first game back after two months out injured, fired United into the lead, then Craig Conway rounded the Aberdeen keeper for the third before former United striker Lee Miller was sent off for the Dons. Morgaro Gomis pounced on a defensive mistake with 12 minutes to go to give United an emphatic 4-1 victory which took them through to face Rangers in the final at Hampden.
1929 - Jacky Kay scored twice as United knocked Stenhousemuir out of the Scottish Cup with a 2-0 at Tannadice in the 2nd round replay. The original match finished 1-1 with Kay scoring at Ochilview.
1957 - After a 1-1 draw at Ochilview in the first match, the Scottish Cup 5th round replay at Tannadice went into extra time, where two goals from Johnny Coyle and two own goals from Marshall gave United a 4-0 win and a place in the next round.
1960 - Ron Yeats scored his only goal for United, from the penalty spot, against East Stirling at Tannadice. Eric Walker, Dennis Gillespie (2), Bobby Norris and a Bolton own goal added to the 6-1 victory as United started to mount a push for promotion to the First Division.
1965 - Jimmy Briggs (pen), Finn Dossing and Tommy Neilson scored in a 3-0 win over Forfar at Station Park to take United through to the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup.

1984 - Paul Sturrock scored his first goal of the season for a 1-0 victory over Ayr United at a snow covered Tannadice to take United through to the 4th round of the Scottish Cup.
1988 - United defeated Greenock Morton 2-0 at Tannadice, Ian Redford scored both goals, one from the penalty spot.
2010 - After disposing of Partick Thistle in the previous round, United were drawn against St Johnstone in the Scottish Cup 5th Round. David Goodwillie scored the only goal in a hard fought victory at McDiarmid Park to put United into the quarter final draw.
1977 - After going behind to an early Ayr United goal, Gordon Wallace, Dave Narey, Paul Sturrock and Paul Hegarty all scored to turn the match on it's head for an easy victory at Tannadice.
1981 - Billy Kirkwood and Davie Dodds scored in a 2-1 win over Rangers in front of a crowd of 14,528 at Tannadice.
1987 - Iain Ferguson gave United the lead after 12 minutes against Falkirk at Tannadice, and Dempsey was sent off for Falkirk before Kevin Gallcher doubled United's advantage. However, Falkirk pulled one back with 15 minutes to go to set up an uneasy finish, but United saw the game out for a 2-1 victory.
1995 - After a 0-0 draw at Tannadice, United travelled to Broadwood Stadium for the first time to take on Clyde in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup. Jerren Nixon scored an excellent solo goal as the Cup holders won 5-1, with Billy McKinlay, David Craig, David Hannah and Dave Bowman scoring the other goals.
2006 - Grant Brebner headed in Charlie Mulgrew's cross 10 minutes before half time to give Craig Brewster's men the lead, but with 8 minutes left, ex-United defender Steven Pressley fell in the box to win a controversial penalty for the equaliser. Barry Robson and Hearts' Brellier both received red cards before the final whistle blew.
1913 - Dundee Hibs played their first ever Scottish Cup tie, ironically at Hampden Park, where David Scrimgeour and Tom Boland scored as the team lost 4-2 to Queens Park.
1956 - After holding the Division One club to a 2-2 draw in the first game, United lost 3-0 to Dundee in the replay at Dens Park as Dundee go through to the next round of the Scottish Cup.

1986 - Tommy Coyne scored twice as United beat Hibs 4-0 at Tannadice, with Eamonn Bannon (pen) and Kevin Gallacher also scoring.
1989 - United defenders Dave Narey and Maurice Malpas played for Scotland in a World Cup Qualifier against Cyprus in Limassol, where ex-United player Richard Gough scored twice, including a late, late winner in a 3-2 victory after Mo Johnston had scored in the first 10 minutes.
1952 - Frank Quinn scored his 20th goal of the season, but couldn't keep up with Peter McKay who scored another hat-trick to take his goal tally to 30, as United won 4-1 against Leith Athletic in the 2nd Round of the Scottish Cup.
1987 - After a 1-1 draw at Tannadice in the Scottish Cup, Airdrie took the lead during the first half of the replay at Broomfield. Iain Ferguson grabbed the equaliser ten minutes later, and Kevin Gallacher scored five minutes after half time for a 2-1 win.
1994 - John Clark signed for Stoke City for £150,000 after 12 years at Tannadice, including 327 appearances and 37 goals.
1999 - After a 0-0 draw at New Broomfield in the Scottish Cup, Billy Dodds scored the only goal of the game as United beat Queens Park 1-0 at Tannadice in the 3rd round replay.
2003 - Dundee defender Dave MacKay headed a Charlie Miller long ball into his own net, but Nacho Novo equalised for Dundee in a 1-1 draw Tannadice. Charlie Miller was sent off half way through the second half.
1945 - Aberdeen recorded the biggest victory by a visiting team at Tannadice, winning 9-1 in a wartime North Eastern League game. However the result unoffical in the record books as it was a war-time match.
1959 - In a mammoth Scottish Cup tie with East Stirling, United are held to a 0-0 draw after extra-time at Tannadice in the replay after the teams had drawn the first match 1-1 just the day before. The tie went to a second replay the following day, the third meeting between the clubs in as many days.
1973 - Pat Gardner and Kenny Cameron scored in a 2-0 win over Hearts at Tynecastle.
1979 - In a top of the table clash with Rangers at Ibrox, United conceded a goal with 9 minutes remaining and lost out 1-0.
1911 - In the club's second season, George Fyfe, Percy Bryson and John Collins scored to give Dundee Hibs a 3-2 victory over Dunfermline at Tannadice in the Consolation Cup 2nd Round.
1925 - A 3-2 win over Albion Rovers kept United on course for their first ever Second Division title. Willie Oswald scored twice to add to Jock Kay's penalty.
1959 - A long running Scottish Cup 3rd round tie with East Stirling finally came to an end as United won the 2nd replay 4-0 at Firs Park. After a 1-1 draw at Firs Park and a 0-0 draw at Tannadice, the third game in as many days saw Dave Sturrock, Ian Scott, Willie McDonald and Hugh Hay finally decide the tie.

1983 - John Holt scored his first and only senior hat-trick as United beat Kilmarnock at Tannadice, where he scored the first three before Eamonn Bannon and Davie Dodds added two more for the 5-0 win.
2005 - Stevie Crawford and James Grady both scored in the first half at Amondvale to give United a 2-0 win over Livingston.
1960 - Second Division United held First Division side Partick Thistle to a 2-2 draw at Tannadice, where goals from Bobby Norris and Dennis Gillespie earned United a replay in the 3rd round of the Scottish Cup.

1988 - Kevin Gallacher scored a hat-trick at East End Park as United beat Dunfermline 3-0.
1993 - A memorable moment in United folklore as Paddy Connolly scored against Partick Thistle at Firhill. As the ball rebounded out after hitting the back of the net, the Partick defender handed the ball back to his keeper to punt up the park for the restart, only for referee Les Mottram to wave play on! Fortunately United went on to win 4-0 with goals from Scott Crabbe (pen), Duncan Ferguson and two from Connolly himself.
1959 - After playing 4 games in the space of a week, including three matches in as many days against East Stirling to decide the Scottish Cup 1st round tie, a tired United side were easily beaten by Third Lanark in the 2nd round, losing 4-0 at Tannadice.
1984 - Davie Dodds put United in front in the League Cup semi-final 1st leg at Tannadice, but Rangers pulled level in the last five minutes to make the score 1-1 with the 2nd leg at Ibrox to come.
1996 - After a couple of call offs, the Scottish Cup 3rd round tie away to Berwick Rangers finally went ahead, with Owen Coyle scoring twice, the first a penalty, in a 2-1 win for United.

Hearts pulled the game level five minutes into the second half, with Billy Hainey making it 5-4 to United before Hearts equalised again with a penalty with 15 minutes to go. Ex-United man Jim Irvine scored the winner for Hearts with four minutes left in an amazing match.
1996 - United were drawn against First Division challengers Dunfermline in the Scottish Cup 4th round, where Craig Brewster scored the only goal of the game with eight minutes left to take United through to the quarter-finals.
2001 - Charlie Miller scored after just three minutes in the Scottish Cup 4th round tie against Motherwell at Fir Park, and Craig Easton put United 2-0 up before half-time for a final score of 2-0 to take the club into the quarter-finals.
1984 - Paul Sturrock put United in front at Tannadice against Hearts in the Scottish Cup 4th round, but Hearts equalised with a John Robertson penalty. Davie Dodds scored the winner with 6 minutes left in a tough 2-1 win where Hearts' Jimmy Bone was sent off for a foul on Paul Hegarty.
1989 - Aberdeen went 1-0 up at Pittodrie in the 4th round of the Scottish Cup, but a Mixu Paatelainen penalty made it 1-1 and took the tie to a replay at Tannadice.
1995 - Cup holders United travelled to Highland League outfit Huntly for their first match in the competition since the 1994 Cup Final. Craig Brewster, Maurice Malpas and David Hannah scored to give the United a 3-1 win.
1998 - After a 1-1 draw at Tannadice, Kjell Olofsson gave United an eary lead against Inverness Caledondian Thistle in the Scottish Cup 4th round replay at the Caledonian Stadium, and Gary McSwegan looked to have sealed the win in 6 minutes to go. However, Caley Thistle made a remarkable comeback scoring twice to level the scores within the last five minutes. Lars Zetterlund scored the winner in extra-time to take United through to the quarter finals.
1958 - After holding Hibernian to a 0-0 draw at Tannadice, United eventually went out of the Scottish Cup after losing the replay 2-0 to the First Division side in the 2nd round. This was the first competitive match played by a United side under floodlights.
1977 - Two goals from Tom McAdam and one from Gordon Wallace put United 3-0 up against Kilmarnock within the first 13 minutes of the Permier Division match at Tannadice. Wallace scored again in the second half for a 4-0 win.

Steven Thompson then came off the bench to score two late goals as United won 4-0 at Tannadice and went through to the next round.
1952 - The attendance record at Tannadice of 20,000 was finally broken after a quarter of a century, as a crowd of 26,407, still a record for a domestic match at the ground, saw United draw 2-2 with Division One opponents Aberdeen. George Cruickshank had put United in front after only 8 minutes, but Aberdeen replayed with 2 goals. United look to be heading out after Andy Dunmore misses a penalty, but Peter McKay yet again rescued United and took Aberdeen to a replay at Pittodrie.

1927 - Having drawn with Montrose at home in the Scottish Cup just the previous day, the replay at Links Park went into extra-time. United won the match 3-1 with two goals from Mickey McGregor and a Dave Walker penalty.
1940 - United's run to the final of the War-Time Cup began with a 4-2 win over Partick Thistle at Firhill, with goals from Jerry Kerr, Tommy Adamson and two from Bobby Gardiner.
