1st September

1954 - United beat Dunfermline 3-1 at Tannadice in a League Cup Section match, with goals form Johnny Coyle (2) and James Murphy.

1971 - Two goals from Andy Rolland and one from Alex Reid give United a 3-1 win over Motherwell in a League Cup group section match at Fir Park.

1979 - United win 2-0 at Tannadice in the 2nd leg of the 2nd round League Cup tie against Airdrie. Goals by Paul Sturrock and Graeme Payne put United through after losing the 1st leg 2-1.

1990 - Alex Cleland scores his first goal for the club with a shot from the edge of the box for the only goal of the game in United's first home game of the season against Motherwell.


2nd September

1959 - Doug Smith makes his debut for United in a 3-0 defeat to Falkirk at Tannadice.

1970 - Jim Henry plays for the Scottish League against the League of Ireland at Celtic Park, with the Scottish League winning 1-0.

1976 - Young defender Ray Stewart makes his United debut against Celtic in a League Cup match at Tannadice.

1987 - After dominating the League Cup quarter-final tie at Dens Park, United lead Dundee 1-0 with a goal from Iain Ferguson. But Tommy Coyne equalises in the last minute and Keith Wright gets the winner in extra time to knock United out.


3rd September

1966 - A high scoring League Cup section match at Tannadice sees United lose 4-3 to Aberdeen. United goals come from Ian Mitchell (2) and a Finn Seemann penalty.

1983 - United win the first Dundee derby of the season 4-1 at Dens Park, with goals from Ralph Milne, John Reilly (2) and Derek Stark.

1988 - Goals from Mixu Paatelainen (2) and Kevin Gallacher give United a 3-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park.

1996 - The League Cup 3rd round Dundee derby at Tannadice ends 2-2, with United's goals coming from Owen Coyle and Gary McSwegan, but First Division side Dundee win 4-3 on penalties.


4th September

1971 - A high scoring match at Tannadice sees United and St Johnstone share the points in a 3-3 draw. Alan Gordon, Alex Reid and Andy Rolland score United's goals.

1976 - A Hamish McAlpine penalty and a Gordon Wallace winner gives United a 2-1 win over Hibs at Easter Road.

1982 - Goals from Maurice Malpas and Davie Dodds see United beat Aberdeen 2-0 at Tannadice in the first League game of the season.

1984 - United knock Celtic out of the League Cup in the quarter-final at Tannadice, with John Clark and Paul Sturrock getting the goals in a 2-1 win.

1991 - Jim McLean signs young midfielder David Hannah from Hamilton Thistle.

1999 - United striker Billy Dodds scores his 4th goal for Scotland, and the winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-1 in a European Championship Qualifying match in Sarajevo, where Don Hutchison also scores.


5th September

1953 - After no wins in their 6 League Cup Section matches, Peter McKay and George Cruickshank score to give United a 2-1 win over Dumbarton in the opening Division Two League game of the season at Tannadice.

1956 - After drawing 0-0 in the first leg at Gayfield, United win the League Cup Play-Off to reach the quarter-finals, beating Arbroath 5-0 with goals from Archie Aikman, Jimmy Reid (2), Johnny Coyle and Jim Coyle.

1959 - Signed from Alloa Athletic just the week before, Dennis Gillespie makes his United debut against St Johnstone at Tannadice.

1998 - After 5 years as manager of St Johnstone, legendary United striker Paul Sturrock leaves his post and returns to Tannadice to take over the reigns after the departure of Tommy McLean.

2000 - Alex Smith's side scrape past First Division side Airdrie in the 3rd round of the League Cup, winning 4-3 on penalties after a 0-0 draw.


6th September

1958 - After beating St Johnstone twice in the group stages of the League Cup, United make it a hat-trick of victories over their Tayside rivals in the space of a month, as United win a thrilling match 4-3 at Muirton Park with goals from Jimmy Wallace (2), Dave Sturrock and a Hawthorne own goal.

1975 - A Graeme Payne penalty gives United a 1-0 win over Hibs at Tannadice.

1986 - United win the first derby of the season, with goals from Eamonn Bannon and Ralph Milne (penalty) giving United a 2-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park.

1988 - United travel to Malta to play Floriana in the 1st round of the European Cup Winners Cup. The 1st leg ends 0-0.


7th September

1963 - United beat St Johnstone 3-1 at Tannadice in their first home match of the 1963/64 season, with goals from Jimmy Briggs (penalty), Dennis Gillespie and Walter Carlyle.

1968 - Goals by Alex Reid (2), Ian Scott and Ian Mitchell give United a 4-1 win over St Johnstone at Muirton Park.

1991 - United beat Dunfermline 3-0 at Tannadice with goals from Dave Bowman, Freddy Van der Hoorn and Duncan Ferguson.


8th September

1951 - United beat Alloa Athletic 4-1 at Tannadice with goals from George Grant (2), Frank Quinn and George Cruickshank.

1979 - Goals from Ralph Milne and Willie Pettigrew see United draw 2-2 with Celtic at Parkhead.

1984 - An entertaining Dundee derby at Tannadice sees Dundee leave with a 4-3 win. John Clark (2) and Paul Sturrock score for United.


9th September

1947 - Manager Willie MacFadyen signs centre-forward Peter McKay from Newburgh.

1959 - After a 1-1 draw at Brockville in the 1st leg, United crash out of the League Cup as they lose the 2nd leg of the play-off with Falkirk 4-0 at Tannadice.

1964 - In the 1st leg of a League Cup quarter final match at Tannadice, United beat Hamilton Accies 8-0 with goals from Jim McManus (2), Frank Munro (2) Ian Mitchell (2) and Lewis Thom (2).

1972 - Goals by Ian Mitchell, Pat Gardner and a Doug Smith penalty see United beat St Johnstone 3-1 at Muirton Park.

1997 - In a League Cup quarter final tie against Rangers at Ibrox, Gary McSwegan comes off the bench to score a fantastic extra-time winner against his old club.


10th September

1960 - United beat St Johnstone 2-0 at Muirton Park with goals from Jim Irvine and Tommy Campbell in their second First Division match since promotion.

1977 - Billy Kirkwood and Andy Rolland (penalty) score the goals that give United a 2-0 win over Hibernian at Tannadice.

1983 - Two goals each from Ralph Milne and Davie Dodds and another from Billy Kirkwood give United an emphatic 5-0 victory over Hibs at Tannadice.

1985 - United defender Richard Gough plays as Scotland qualify for the 1986 World Cup in Mexico with a 1-1 draw with Wales in Cardiff where Davie Cooper scores the vital equaliser, but in the end it's a sad day for Scottish Football as manager Jock Stein tragically dies from a heart attack during the game.

1994 - New signing Dragutin Ristic scores for United in a 1-1 draw with Motherwell at Tannadice.

1996 - After defeats to Dundee and Hearts, manager Billy Kirkwood leaves the post after a poor start to the season. Chairman Jim McLean appoints ex-Motherwell boss Tommy McLean as the new manager, and it is the first time the two brothers have worked together at the top level.


11th September

1965 - In front of a crowd of 16,000 at Dens Park, United beat Dundee 5-0 with goals from Finn Dossing (3), Dennis Gillespie and a Lennart Wing penalty. This game became known as the 'Dens Park Massacre of 65'.

1971 - A high scoring Dundee derby at Dens Park sees Dundee win 6-4. United's goals come from Alan Gordon, Andy Rolland (2) and a Doug Smith penalty. This defeat brings United's run of 11 derbies without defeat to an end.

1976 - United beat Celtic 1-0 at Tannadice, with Gordon Wallace getting the winning goal.

1990 - Christian Dailly becomes the youngest player ever to represent Scotland at Under-21 level when he makes his debut against Romania at Easter Road.

1993 - An Andy McLaren header gives United a 1-0 win over Dundee at Tannadice.


12th September

1956 - United appear in the quarter-finals of the League Cup for the first time in 6 years when they face Dundee at Dens Park, but goals from Dave Sturrock and Jimmy Reid (2) aren't enough as Dundee win 7-3 in the 1st leg, leaving United a 4 goal deficit to pull back in the 2nd leg at Tannadice.

1959 - Jim Irvine scores 4 times in an 8-1 win over Queens Park in Glasgow, with Dennis Gillespie scoring a hat-trick and Watt Newton also among the goals.

1970 - Goals from Kenny Cameron, Alan Gordon and Dennis Gillespie give United a 3-2 win over Dundee at Tannadice in the first derby of the season.

1978 - United go down 1-0 in the 1st leg 1st round UEFA Cup tie against Standard Liege in Belgium.

1981 - Paul Sturrock (2),Eamonn Bannon, Ralph Milne and Billy Kirkwood score as United beat Dundee 5-2 at Tannadice.

1998 - Paul Sturrock's first match as manager of Dundee United ends in a goalless draw with Rangers at Tannadice.


13th September

1947 - New signing Peter McKay makes his United debut in a 1-0 defeat to Cowdenbeath.

1969 - United beat Airdrieonians 5-2 at Tannadice, with goals Dennis Gillespie (penalty), Kenny Cameron, Ian Scott, Davie Wilson and a Delaney own goal.

1975 - Goals from Paul Sturrock, Paul Hegarty and Jackie Copland give United a 3-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

1989 - United travel to Northern Ireland to play Glentoran in the 1st round of the UEFA Cup. Goals from Alex Cleland, Jim McInally and new signing Peter Hinds give United a 3-1 win to take back home for the 2nd leg.

2003 - Andy McLaren returns to make his second debut for United, in a 0-0 draw with Livingston at the City Stadium.


14th September

1968 - Goals from Ian Mitchell, Wilson Wood and Kenny Cameron give United a 3-1 win over Dundee at Tannadice in the first derby of the season.

1977 - A Paul Sturrock goal gives United a 1-0 lead in Denmark against Copenhagen in the 1st leg of the UEFA Cup 1st round tie.

1983 - In their first ever match in the European Cup, United beat Hamrun Spartans from Malta 3-0 in the 1st round 1st leg, with goals from Derek Stark, Eamonn Bannon and John Reilly.


15th September

1956 - After losing the 1st leg 7-3 at Dens, United restore some pride as they beat Dundee 2-1 at Tannadice with goals from Jimmy Reid and Maurice Milne, but Dundee win 8-5 on aggregate.

1962 - Walter Carlyle scores to give United a share of the points in the Dundee derby, as the match against Dundee at Tannadice ends 1-1.

1970 - Goals from Stewart Markland, Alex Reid and Ian Reid give United a 3-2 victory over Grasshoppers from Switzerland at Tannadice in the 1st leg of the UEFA Cup 1st round.

1973 - A Walter Smith thunderbolt gives United a 1-0 win over Dundee at Dens Park.

1982 - Davie Dodds scores to give United a 1-1 draw with Dutch club PSV Eindhoven in the 1st leg of a UEFA Cup 1st round tie at Tannadice.

1994 - After winning the Scottish Cup just a few months before, United qualify for the European Cup Winners Cup for the third time. The 1st round tie with Tatran Presov from Slovakia starts well with David Hannah, Gordan Petric and Jerren Nixon giving United a 3-2 win.


16th September

1950 - United play Ayr United in the quarter-finals of the League Cup, but go down 3-0 in the 1st leg at Somerset Park.

1967 - Jimmy Briggs and Jimmy Millar score in a 2-2 draw with Dundee at Dens Park.

1972 - United beat Dundee 2-1 at Tannadice, with Pat Gardner and Sandy White getting the goals.

1981 - A memorable night in Europe, as United beat Monaco 5-2 in the UEFA Cup 1st round. Goals from Eamonn Bannon (2), Billy Kirkwood and Davie Dodds (2) give United a healthy lead to take back to Tannadice for the 2nd leg.

1989 - Hamish French equalises for United for a 2-2 draw with Celtic at Tannadice, with Freddy Van der Hoorn scoring United's other goal.


17th September

1938 - Horace Wooley scores twice on his United debut in a 3-0 win over neighbours Dundee in a 2nd Division match at Tannadice, with Andrew Meikleham also scoring in only United's 2nd ever competitive victory over the Dens Park club.

1955 - A remarkable 5-5 draw with East Stirling at Firs Park sees both Tom McGairy and Johnny Coyle score twice, with Alan Massie scoring from the penalty spot. This is United's 4th score draw in a row, all in the first 4 games of the season.

1960 - In the first Dundee derby for 13 years, United beat Dundee 3-1 at Tannadice with two goals from Tommy Campbell and a Jimmy Briggs penalty. It's the first time the clubs have met in the top flight since 1939.

1980 - United travel to Poland for their UEFA Cup 1st Round 1st leg tie, drawing 0-0 with Slask Wroclaw.

1983 - Goals from John Holt and Davie Dodds give United a 2-1 win over newly promoted St Johnstone at Muirton Park.

1986 - United lose their 1st round 1st leg UEFA Cup tie 1-0 to RC Lens in France.


18th September

1948 - New signing George Cruickshank makes his United debut against Stenhousemuir at Tannadice, where Kinnaird Ouchterlonie, Jack Court and Peter McKay (2) score in a 4-2 victory in the League Cup.

1957 - An amazing game at Tannadice sees United draw 5-5 with Arbroath, with goals from Dave Sturrock (2), Wilson Humphries and Johnny Coyle (2). Stewart Fraser plays as a trialist before signing for the club shortly afterwards.

1965 - Goals from Frank Munro (2), Finn Dossing (2) and Ian Mitchell give United a 5-1 win over St Johnstone at Tannadice.

1974 - Paul Sturrock makes his debut for United as he comes on as a substitute for George Fleming in the European Cup Winners' Cup 1st round tie against Jiul Petrosani of Romania. Goals from Jackie Copland, Dave Narey and Pat Gardner give United a 3-0 lead after the 1st leg.

1985 - Paul Sturrock becomes the first Dundee United player to score a hat-trick in European competition as United beat Bohemians of Dublin 5-2 in the UEFA Cup 1st round in Ireland. Eamonn Bannon also scored twice.

1990 - In the UEFA Cup 1st Round, United travel to Iceland to take on FH Hafnarfjordfur in the 1st leg. Goals from Alex Cleland and Darren Jackson, as well as an own goal, give United a 3-1 lead going into the 2nd leg.


19th September

1925 - Following promotion and major ground improvements at Tannadice, United have their first ever meeting with Celtic, where United win 1-0. The match is watched in front of a new ground record of 20,000.

1979 - In the 1st round of the UEFA Cup, United are held to a 0-0 draw at Tannadice by Belgium club Anderlecht in the 1st leg.

1984 - United travel to Sweden for the 1st leg of their UEFA Cup 1st round tie with Stockholm, losing the match 1-0.

1986 - Ex-United striker Davie Dodds returns to Scotland from Neuchatel Xamax in Switzerland to sign for Aberdeen.

1992 - Billy Dodds scores the winner for Dundee in a derby match at Tannadice that finishes 1-0.


20th September

1958 - A high scoring start to the season continues as United narrowly lose out 4-3 to Dumbarton at Boghead, with Willie McDonald, Tommy Martin and a Jackie Hunter penalty counting for United.

1969 - A goal from Alan Gordon and a Dennis Gillespie penalty give United a 2-1 win over Dundee at Dens Park.

1986 - United win 5-1 over Hamilton Accies at Douglas Park, with goals from Paul Hegarty (2), Iain Ferguson (2) and Paul Sturrock.

1988 - Ex-United striker Davie Dodds scores for Aberdeen in the semi-final of the League Cup as United go out 2-0 at Dens Park. Miodrag Krivokapic finally makes his United debut after receiving his work permit.

2003 - Two goals from Charlie Miller gives United their first win of the season as United beat Partick Thistle 2-0 at Firhill.


21st September

1955 - Jim Coyle and Johnny Coyle both score twice as United beat Alloa Athletic 6-2 at Tannadice, with the other goals coming from Jimmy Reid and Archie Aikman.

1957 - The Shed enclosure at the west end of Tannadice Park is opened for the first time for the home match with St Johnstone, where goals from Dave Sturrock and Wilson Humphries give United a 2-1 win.

1963 - United beat East Stirling 2-0 at Tannadice, with goals from Jimmy Briggs (penalty) and Dennis Gillespie.

1968 - A Kenny Cameron goal is enough to beat Aberdeen 1-0 at Pittodrie.

1983 - Davie Dodds scores on his full international debut as Scotland beat Uruguay 2-0 in a friendly match at Hampden Park, where Richard Gough also wins his 8th cap. John Robertson also scores.

1993 - In the League Cup semi-final at Tynecastle, United lose out to Hibs 1-0, with the goal coming from ex-United man Darren Jackson.


22nd September

1979 - Frank Kopel and Willie Pettigrew score in a 2-1 win over Partick Thistle at Tannadice.

1982 - In the first leg of the quarter finals of the League Cup, goals from Richard Gough, Eamonn Bannon and Billy Kirkwood give United a 3-1 advantage over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

1990 - Rangers centre-half Terry Butcher misjudges a Billy Thomson kick and scores a stunning own goal to draw the teams level after Mo Johnston's opener. Billy McKinlay scores the winner for United in the second half.


23rd September

1967 - United draw 2-2 with Hibs at Tannadice, with goals from Finn Seemann and Finn Dossing.

1975 - In United's first match in the competition after the Inter Cities Fairs Cup changed its name, United travel to Iceland to take on IBV Keflavik in the 1st round of the UEFA Cup. United take a two goal advantage back to Tannadice with Dave Narey getting both goals.

1998 - Manager Paul Sturrock makes his first major signing by bringing ex-Dundee striker Billy Dodds to Tannadice from Aberdeen, with Robbie Winters heading in the opposite direction.

2000 - After going down 3-0 at Tannadice to Aberdeen, United fight back with goals from Craig Easton, Stephen McConalogue and David Hannah, but Aberdeen finish the match as 5-3 winners, with ex-United front man Robbie Winters scoring a hat-trick.


24th September

1966 - United beat Ayr United 7-0 at Somerset Park, with goals from Finn Dossing (2), Orjan Persson (2), Ian Mitchell (2) and a Monan own goal.

1985 - In the 1st leg of the semi-finals of the League Cup, United go down 1-0 to Aberdeen at Tannadice, with Richard Gough receiving a red card.

1988 - In a League match against Motherwell at Fir Park, United win 2-1 with both goals coming from Ian Redford.

2002 - Young midfielder Steven O'Donnell scores a hat-trick on his debut as United knock Queens Park out of the League Cup with the score 4-1. Steven Thompson scores the other goal.


25th September

1954 - Two goals from George Cruickshank are enough to see off Third Lanark as United win 2-0 at Tannadice in Reggie Smith's first game as manager, after he replaced Willie MacFadyen in the hot seat.

1976 - Two goals from Tom McAdam give United a 2-1 win over Partick Thistle at Tannadice.

1982 - United beat St Mirren 3-0 at Tannadice in the fourth match of the 1982/83 season to remain unbeaten, with goals from Paul Sturrock (2) and Ralph Milne.


26th September

1953 - United are hammered 9-1 by Third Lanark at Cathkin Park, with Johnny Samuel scoring United's goal from the penalty spot. This is also United's third defeat in a row.

1984 - Two goals from John Clark see United take a 2-1 lead in the 1st leg of the League Cup semi final at Tynecastle. United's Dave Narey and Dave Bowman of Hearts both see red after a tussle.

1987 - United beat Falkirk 3-0 at Tannadice with goals from Paul Sturrock (2) and Gordon McLeod.

1998 - Billy Dodds scores a hat-trick on his first start in the United first team, as United beat one of his old clubs, St Johnstone, 3-1 at McDiarmid Park.

2002 - Eddie Thompson becomes Chairman and the first ever outright owner of Dundee United Football Club.


27th September

1958 - United make it 20 goals in 7 games as they beat Stenhousemuir 5-2 at Tannadice, with goals from Tommy Martin, Ian Scott and a Wilson Humphries hat-trick.

1975 - United receive their first ever six figure transfer fee as Aston Villa buy Andy Gray for 110,000.

1977 - Leading 1-0 after the 1st leg at Tannadice, United lose 3-0 against Copenhagen in the away leg and go out of the UEFA Cup in the 1st round.

1978 - A 0-0 draw at Tannadice against Standard Liege isn't enough, as United go out of the UEFA Cup after losing the 1st leg 1-0.

1989 - John Clark and Kevin Gallacher score to give United a 2-0 victory over Glentoran at Tannadice in the UEFA Cup. United beat the club from Northern Ireland 5-1 on aggregate.


28th September

1968 - Goals from Wilson Wood, Davie Wilson (2) and Kenny Cameron help United beat Arbroath 4-2 at Tannadice.

1983 - In the clubs first ever European Cup tie at Tannadice, United beat Hamrun Spartans of Malta 3-0 in the 2nd leg 1st round tie, with goals from Billy Kirkwood and Ralph Milne (2) taking United though 6-0 on aggregate.

1993 - Losing 2-0 to Brondby after the 1st leg in Denmark, goals from Billy McKinlay and Scott Crabbe pull United level on aggregate, but Brondby get an important away goal in extra time to take them through. John Clark scores a consolation goal.


29th September

1962 - Ian Mitchell becomes the youngest player ever to make a first-team appearance for Dundee United when he makes his debut at the age of just 16 years and four months, playing in a 5-0 win over Hibernian at Tannadice. Dennis Gillespie, Walter Carlyle (2), George Pattie and Jim Irvine are the scorers.

1979 - Ex-England and Chelsea goalkeeper Peter Bonetti plays the last of his 7 matches for United, aged 37, as United lose 4-1 to Morton at Cappielow. Willie Pettigrew scores for United.

1982 - United travel to Holland for their UEFA Cup 2nd round 2nd leg tie with PSV Eindhoven. Goals from Paul Hegarty and Billy Kirkwood take United through after the 1-1 draw at Tannadice two weeks before.

1994 - Leading 3-2 after the 1st leg at Tannadice, United go out of the European Cup Winners Cup in the first round, losing the away leg 3-1 against Slovakian club Tatran Presov, with Jerren Nixon scoring.

2001 - A late goal form substitute Steven Thompson gives United a 2-1 victory over Hearts at Tynecastle, with Jim McIntyre scoring United's other goal.


30th September

1950 - Two goals from Peter McKay and a Frank Quinn hat-trick see United beat Kilmarnock 5-3 at Tannadice.

1964 - United appear in their first ever League Cup semi final, but narrowly lose out to Rangers after extra time at Hampden, with Doug Moran scoring United's goal in the 2-1 defeat.

1970 - A tense 0-0 draw with Grasshoppers in the 2nd leg of the UEFA Cup 1st round tie in Switzerland is enough to take United through to the 2nd round, after winning the 1st leg 3-2.

1975 - Goals from Paul Hegarty, Henry Hall (2) and Paul Sturrock take United through to the 2nd round of the UEFA Cup, as they beat IBV Keflavik 4-0 at Tannadice to win the tie 6-0 on aggregate.

1981 - Ralph Milne scores as United lose 2-1 to Monaco at Tannadice in the 1st round of the UEFA Cup, but still go through to the 2nd round after their extraordinary 5-2 victory in the 1st leg in Monaco. This game was attended by Prince Ranier and Grace Kelly and will forever be remembered for the immortal lines in Michael Marr's song Hamish.

1995 - In his last game for United, Billy McKinlay scores a hat-trick in a 3-2 win over Dundee at Dens Park.
